PLUS ULTRA LP 502008
Keeping with the tradition of earlier
productions, the "Nec Plus Ultra" series, devoted to hitherto unreleased
recordings of exceptional character, is happy to present for the 30th anniversary of the
death of Django Reinhardt this hitherto unpublished album recorded in February 1951 at the
Club St Germain in Paris. We owe this document to Marlow Productions, of Hickville, USA,
which is releasing it simultaneously in the United States.
To situate this event historically,
Reinhardt's engagement at the Club St-Germain marked his return to public performance
after a silence of about a year which he devoted to painting. It was also at the Club that
an exhibition of his works was held - and there is a reference to this in the recording
when Reinhardt jokingly answers a journalist's question about it.
Musically, Reinhardt's gambit here
was to play for the first time with young New Wave musicians such as Hubert Fol and
Maurice Vander.
This cabaret recording, made in
public, suffers from some background noise and the sound does not capture throughout the
full musical colour of the instruments. But it is a historical document, and it would be
nice if others could be discovered more often. |
